New Vocab - Plot Structure

Exposition - The introduction of the story where characters, setting, and the basic situation are revealed.
Example: In the movie The Lion King, the exposition includes the presentation of Simba's birth and the introduction of the Pridelands.

Conflict - The struggle between opposing forces that drives the plot.

Example: The conflict arises when Scar, Simba's uncle, plots to overthrow Mufasa and take the throne.

Rising Action - A series of events that build tension and lead up to the climax.

Example: Simba grows up and faces various challenges, including being manipulated by Scar and leaving the Pridelands.

New Vocab - Plot Structure

Climax - The turning point or the most intense moment in the story.

Example: The climax occurs when Simba confronts Scar and the truth about Mufasa's death is revealed.

Falling Action - Events that follow the climax and lead to the resolution.

Example: After the battle with Scar, Simba takes his rightful place as king, and the Pridelands begin to heal.

Resolution - The conclusion where loose ends are tied up.

Example: The resolution occurs when Simba and Nala have a cub of their own, and the circle of life continues.

Metaphor - compares two things without using "like" or "as." It suggests that one thing is another to highlight a similarity.
"Time is a thief."

Simile - compares two things using "like" or "as."

"I'm as hungry as a horse."

Foreboding - a feeling that something bad is going to happen. It often creates a sense of anxiety or unease.

"As dark clouds gathered in the sky, there was a sense of foreboding that a storm was coming."


Mood - the feeling or atmosphere that a piece of writing creates for the reader, it can be any emotion

"A story set in a dark, eerie forest can create a spooky mood that makes readers feel tense or scared."


Theme - central idea or message in a piece of writing. It’s what the story is really about on a deeper level.

"The importance of friendship, showing how friends help each other through tough times."

Literary Terms You Need to Know!

Foreboding - a feeling that something bad is going to happen. It often creates a sense of anxiety or unease.

Fore - this stem means BEFORE PRE - also means before.

Previously we talked about FOREshadowing which means something is being predicted or there are hints about what is going to happen next.

Explicitly vs. Implicitly

Implicitly -
means something is hinted at or suggested without being directly stated. You have to figure it out from clues.


Example - When the teacher raised an eyebrow, she implicitly told us to be quiet without saying a word.

​Explicitly means something is stated clearly and directly, leaving no room for confusion.

Example - The teacher explicitly told us, "Please stop talking and listen."
