Story Time!
Anthony is a 16 year old sophomore in high school. He just recently passed his drivers test and got his driver’s license. With his money, and some help from his parents, he purchased a car so that he could start driving to school. Anthony paid $4,000 dollars and his parents contributed $4,000 dollars.
21
One day he was going to the gym after school to work out before his date with his girlfriend, and he pulled into the parking lot to find a spot. It was the busy time of the day for the gym and he drove around the parking lot a few times before someone was pulling out of a parking spot that was close to the front door. As the person pulled away he sped up to get to the spot. As he turned to pull into the space, another car came out of nowhere and tried to jet into the same space, before he knew it, they had collided with the front end of both cars.
22
He got out of the car, upset at what just happened, and he walked towards the other car. The other driver was a young man who looked about the same age as him. Both drivers started yelling and arguing about the parking spot and the damage to their cars. In an instant, they were in each other’s faces. A shove happened, and blows were thrown between each. Some other gym patrons separated the individuals, and another called the police. The local sheriff’s deputies showed up a few moments later, and placed both individuals in cuffs. After interviewing people around, it was determined that Anthony was the aggressor that shoved and punched the other individual first. He was placed under arrest and taken to the county jail and booked for battery.
23
His parents arrived at the scene when Anthony was being arrested and put in the cop car. The dad repaired the damage to the car to make it drivable, and took the car home. Then they went up to the jail to bail Anthony out. A few months later, after court appearance and sentencing, Anthony was sentenced to 30 days community service and a $1,000 fine. His parents took his car from him, and had to pay for the damages to his car. Being that both were determined at fault in the accident, the other individual had to pay for his damages. In all, his parents spent around $7,500 dollars for attorney's fees, damage to the car, bail money to get him out of jail, and increases in their car insurance premiums. They also spent around 75 hours of time dealing with the repercussions of this event.
24
As a result, Anthony’s parents grounded him with no phone for 1 month, made him ride the school bus to and from school for the rest of the school year, he was only allowed to use the car to drive to houses to cut grass, which was his part time job and how he got the money to pay for some of the car. His parents also enrolled him in anger management counseling sessions. They also required Anthony to pay them $250 a month until the $7,500 dollars was repaid, which would take him around 30 months. Because of the attorney that the family hired, who was able to work with the local district attorney (DA), Anthony was treated as a juvenile and his record would be sealed when he turned 18. He was 6 months away from being 17, which would have automatically charged him as an adult under Georgia State laws.
25
Anthony was upset with his parents and took issue with them requiring him to pay them back. He said he never asked for help, and was fine on his own. He also took issue with having to pay them back without having any say in the matter. Anthony was in a rough spot, and he was angry at himself and his parents.
26
Open Ended
Should he have to pay them back?
Should his parents be able to ground him and tell him what he can and cannot do?
What else would you impose on Anthony if you were his parents?
27
Open Ended
Now, let's imagine this story again, but how would it be different if it were two friends instead of Anthony and his parents?
Say Anthony and Zack. The two kids were arguing over the parking spot, and another friend came to Anthony’s aid.
How would this story be different?
Do you think Anthony would still be angry at himself and his friend?
Could his friend set out requirements like his parents did?
