People have known for years that it is vital to have clean drinking water.
Events in Flint, Michigan, grabbed and held people's attention.
Flint's water was tested. In addition to having other unwanted substances, it had high levels of lead. Besides causing high blood pressure, lead poisoning can damage the brain, kidneys, and reproductive organs in adults. In children, it can cause severe damage to the brain and nervous system.

Article Structure
The first section of the article is set up as a straightforward nonfiction piece. The beginning introduces the person and main idea to be discussed throughout the article. It provides key background information about Rao, her recent achievements, and her goals.
At this point in the article, the structure switches to a question-and-answer format. Because the writer included the interview itself, readers get an authentic representation of what questions were asked and how the speaker responded. Other than editing the interview for clarity, Rao's answers have not been changed.
