Adair’s theory in brief

§Known as the action-centred leadership model.

§Effective leadership revolves around three key areas:

1.Task: The leader must focus on achieving the objectives and ensuring that the team is clear
on what needs to be done.

2.Team: The leader should cultivate a cohesive team, fostering collaboration, trust, and morale
among team members.

3.Individual: The leader needs to consider the individual needs and development of team
members, supporting their growth and ensuring they feel valued.

Individual: Leaders in protective services might

and well-being of their personnel, recognizing that
individual support is crucial for overall team
effectiveness.

Task: During a major incident, a police leader may
clearly outline objectives (e.g., securing the area,
ensuring public safety, and gathering evidence) while
assigning specific roles to officers based on their
expertise.

Team: In a hostage situation, a tactical team leader
would ensure that all team members understand
their specific roles (e.g., negotiator, tactical support)
and work collaboratively to achieve a successful
resolution.

Individual: Senior officers may take on mentoring
roles for newer recruits, helping them develop their
skills and confidence while also providing
personalized feedback and support.
