WELCOME TO MRS. M’S CLASSROOM

Today’s Lesson:

1.1.4 Absolute Value & Adding and Subtracting Integers

Agenda:

define and explain the concept of absolute value
evaluate the absolute value of positive and negative integers
compare and contrast the absolute values of different integers
identify and apply integer operation rules for addition and subtraction
use integer operations to represent real-world scenarios

Vocabulary: absolute value, equation, expression, integer,
negative number, positive number

4

media

The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0.

The symbol | | is used to show the absolute value or distance
a number is from 0.

Using a number line helps to visualize this relationship.

Answers should be POSITIVE!!!

ABSOLUTE VALUE

Examples:
| 6 | = 6
| -6 | = 6

Absolute value includes more than movement left or right on a number line.
Recall that a number line can be vertical (up and down) or horizontal (left to
right).

Vertical (up and down) positions can also be used to describe distance.
Vertical distances are used in many ways. Here are some examples:

An airplane is flying 1,000 feet above the ground.
A dolphin is swimming 50 feet underwater.
The top of a mountain is 3,000 feet above sea level.

The most common way vertical distances are described is called elevation.

You can compare two numbers shown inside the absolute value
symbol, | | , using similar steps as other number comparisons.

The symbols and words used to compare absolute values are:

<, less than
>, greater than
=, equal

Numbers need to be in standard form before comparing.

You can describe comparisons between numbers using symbols
or words.

Example

15 < 40 OR 15 is less than 40

COMPARING ABSOLUTE

VALUES

10

media

First, find the absolute values.
Next, consider which number is farther away from zero.
Then, use a comparison symbol or words to show the

relationship between the numbers.

Comparing absolute values is useful when describing if an object is closer to a certain
point.

Mount Moriah is in New Hampshire and has a summit, or top, at an elevation of 4,049 feet
above sea level. Mount West Bond is found in the same mountain range with a maximum
elevation of 4,540 feet above sea level.

Absolute values can be used to compare the distances and find which has a greater or
lesser elevation.
