Responsibility · Respect · Resilience
Today, we are learning how the cells get the energy
they need during the process of aerobic respiration.
4
Responsibility · Respect · Resilience
Respiration is not breathing.
Respiration is the process of breaking down Glucose using oxygen to
produce water, carbon dioxide and energy.
Note that respiration is not breathing.
What is breathing?

INSTRUCTIONS
How is respiration different from
photosynthesis?
Use your browser to find out and
write the meaning of the
keywords in the next slide.
Read the following
very carefully as it
will be needed to
complete the next
task
Cells need energy to function: Just like you
need food for energy, cells need energy to
grow, move, and repair themselves.
Glucose is the fuel: Glucose is a type of sugar
that cells use as their main source of energy.
Aerobic respiration breaks down glucose: In
aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down with
the help of oxygen to release energy.
Carbon dioxide and water are produced:
During this process, carbon dioxide and water
are also produced as waste products.
Where it happens: Most of aerobic respiration
takes place inside tiny structures called
mitochondria within cells.
