Key Vocabulary

Mixture- A combination of two or more substances that can be separated.

Solution- A special type of mixture where one substance dissolves into another.

Solute- The substance that dissolves.

Solvent- The substance that does the dissolving.

Dissolve- When a substance breaks apart and spreads evenly in a liquid.

4

One substance dissolves into another, forming a homogenous mixture.  The substances are indistinguishable from each other and the mixture has a uniform appearance. Homogeneous mixtures are also known as solutions.

Solutions

Substances that are mixed and make a heterogenous mixture. The components of a heterogeneous mixture can be distinguished visually and separated into their original parts either by hand or using tools.

What is dissolving?

9

Dissolving happens when water breaks apart the tiny particles (molecules) of a substance and spreads them out.

Water is made of special molecules that have tiny electrical charges.

Some substances like sugar and salt have similar charges, so water pulls them apart and they dissolve.

10

Other substances like oil or sand don't have the right charges, so they don't dissolve in water.

Some substances do not dissolve!
