External conflicts - Goths
In 376CE, the Goths ,came from south
east to the edge of the Danube
river, attacked and plundered the city of
Rome. Plunder means to loot, or to take
things by force. It was the first time in
centuries that nomadic invaders had
entered Rome. In the battle of
Hadrianopolis sometimes called
Adrianopolis in 378 CE, the Roman
emperor Valens was killed then in
410CE after looting the city for three
days, the Goths left. The city of Rome
tried to recover and go on, but it was
seriously weakened.
32
ATTACK BY OTHER GROUPS
In 445, the Huns united under the leadership of
Attila. First his armies swept into the Eastern
Empire. Huns were horsemen armed with
larger, more powerful than the Romans. These
attacks placed great pressure on the Roman
military. They conquered the eastern territories
of the Empire. The Huns dominance started to
decline when their leader,Attila, died in 453CE.
Germanic tribes like Visigoths and Franks took
control of most of western Europe, including
france and Spain. The Suevi established a
kingdom in northern Spain. The Vandals
conquered the Roman province of Africa, which
is now present day Tunisia,Algeria and Libya.
