Key Vocabulary

  • Anion and Cation

  • Ionic Bonds

  • Ionic Compounds

  • Electron Dot Structure

3

Two type of ions:

Anions & Cations

Anions - More electrons than protons = NEGATIVE CHARGE

Cations - Fewer electrons than protons = POSITIVE CHARGE

Trick: Cation ( t looks like a + sign)

Anion (n for negative!)

Question image

Does the ocean really have salt in it?

Yes

No

Is this a trick question...

6

Ocean Salt:

  • Yes, we can get salt from the ocean, but...

  • The sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl) are dissolved in water (H2O), so...

  • The water must be removed so the sodium and chlorine can combine to form salt.

Most of the rocks and minerals in the Earth's crust are made of + and - Ions held together by IONIC BONDING

  • Ionic compounds is an electrically neutral compound consisting of + and - ions.

8

Ionic Bonds

Oppositely charged particles attract each other.

This is called ELECTROSTATIC force.

Ionic bond is the ELECTROSTATIC force that hold atoms together in an ionic compound.

Positive + ions attract Negative - ions.

Multiple Choice

Question image

What is an electrostatic force?

1

an attraction between like-charged particles

2

an attraction between oppositely charged particles

3

an attraction between charged and neutral particles

Ionic Compounds

Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals.

Metals have 1-2 valence electrons; non-metals have 5-7 valence electrons.

Metals become cations by TRANSFERING their electrons to Non-metals.

Non-metals become anions by accepting electrons.

12

Electron Dot Diagrams

Sodium (Na) is a metal with one valance electron.

Chlorine (Cl) is a non-metal with seven valance electrons.

Sodium TRANSFERS one electron to Chlorine.

Sodium becomes a cation (positive charge) and Chlorine becomes an anion (negative charge).

Question image

Explain why sodium (Na) becomes a cation when it transfers an electron to chlorine (Cl). Hint - electrons are no longer equal to the protons.

14

Poll

In an ionic bond, are electrons lost, shared, or transfered?

lost

shared

transferred

15

Poll

Can oppositely charged particles be attracted to each other?

Yes

No
