The outcome of the election made it clear that the nation was divided! 


Despite Lincoln’s statements that he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the South, Southerners did not trust him.

Texas decision...

Texans also faced the decision of whether to secede. Many Texans urged Governor Sam Houston to call for a convention to discuss the question. 


The Texas Secession Convention ordered all state official to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.

Governor Sam Houston believed this oath violated the one he had already sworn to uphold the U. S. Constitution.


He refused to take the secession oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. As a result the Convention removed him from the office of governor.
