Central Tendency
today we want to describe central tendency of data
measures of central tendency include the mean, the median, and the mode.
8
Mean
The mean is the average of a data set.
To find the mean we add all the values of a data set together, the divide by the number of entries.
9
Mean Example 1
The following numbers represent the amount of hours Isaac has spent on homework over the last week. Find the average.

Median
The Median is the middle value when the values are in NUMERICAL ORDER. (We can not find median if the numbers are not in numerical order.
12
Median Example 1
Find the median for the data 4,4,3,2,2,2,8,7,9
Make sure your list is in numerical order
2,2,2,3,4,4,7,8,9
the median is 4
13
Median with even numbers
imagine our data set has an even amount of numbers
4,4,5,8,9,10
there is no middle number, but that does not mean there is no median
the median of the data set is 6.5

MODE AND RANGE
the mode of a data set is the number that appears the most. If no number appears more than once, there is no mode.
The range is the biggest number minus the smallest number of your data set.
