Central Tendency

  • today we want to describe central tendency of data

  • measures of central tendency include the mean, the median, and the mode.

8

Mean

  • The mean is the average of a data set.

  • To find the mean we add all the values of a data set together, the divide by the number of entries.

9

Mean Example 1

  • The following numbers represent the amount of hours Isaac has spent on homework over the last week. Find the average.

  • 3,8,4,6,5,4

Median

  • The Median is the middle value when the values are in NUMERICAL ORDER. (We can not find median if the numbers are not in numerical order.

12

Median Example 1

  • Find the median for the data 4,4,3,2,2,2,8,7,9

  • Make sure your list is in numerical order

  • 2,2,2,3,4,4,7,8,9

  • the median is 4

13

Median with even numbers

  • imagine our data set has an even amount of numbers

  • 4,4,5,8,9,10

  • there is no middle number, but that does not mean there is no median

  • the median of the data set is 6.5

MODE AND RANGE

  • the mode of a data set is the number that appears the most. If no number appears more than once, there is no mode.

  • The range is the biggest number minus the smallest number of your data set.

  • 10,20,30,40,50,60

  • 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,25
