Electrocardiograms

• AKA: ECG or EKG

• Waveform - P-Q-R-S-T-U

What happens at each Wave

​P: Depolarization of atrial muscles
QRS: Depolarization of ventricular muscles & Repolarization of atrial muscles
T: Reploarization of ventricular muscles
U: Prolonged repolarization of ventricle muscles (Can occur with low potassium or a conditioned athlete.)

• Count Squares between R waves

• Large squares are 0.2 seconds

• Small squares are 0.04 second

• HR = 60s/min/seconds inbetween points

Calculating HR

Example from Above:

• Count Squares between R waves

• 4 large; 5 small

• 4*0.2s + 5*0.04s = 1s

• HR = 60s/1min/1s

• 60bpm

Classifying HRs

• 60bpm - 100bmp = normal

• <60bpm = bradycardia

• >100bpm = tachycardia
