Any Questions About Last Week?

8

Electrocardiograms

  • AKA: ECG or EKG

  • Waveform - P-Q-R-S-T-U

  • We are going to record an EKG today

media

9

What happens at each Wave

P: Depolarization of atrial muscles
QRS: Depolarization of ventricular muscles & Repolarization of atrial muscles
T: Reploarization of ventricular muscles
U: Prolonged repolarization of ventricle muscles (Can occur with low potassium or a conditioned athlete.)

  • Count Squares between R waves

  • Large squares are 0.2 seconds

  • Small squares are 0.04 second

  • HR = 60s/min/seconds inbetween points

Calculating HR

Example from Above:

  • Count Squares between R waves

  • 4 large; 5 small

  • 4*0.2s + 5*0.04s = 1s

  • HR = 60s/1min/1s

  • 60bpm

11

Classifying HRs

  • 60bpm - 100bmp = normal

  • <60bpm = bradycardia

  • >100bpm = tachycardia

12

Multiple Choice

Someone with a heart rate of 50bpm is

1

Normal HR

2

Tachycardic

3

Bradycardic

ECG measure voltages between multiple pairs of points. Each pair of points has a name as can seen in this image.

  • Bring a Pencil w/eraser

  • Clipboard with answser sheet provided

  • Stations will be set up and you move around

How the Practical Works

18

Types of Questions

For something marked we can ask: (into the Left Ventricluar Wall)

  • What space is this? (L Ventricle)

  • What valve will blood go through after this? (Aortic Semilunar Valve)

  • Is the blood found her oxygenated or deoxygenated? (Oxygenated)

  • Identify the tissue ? (Trabeculae Carneae)

  • What is the function of this structure?
