Simplifying Exponents

shortcut: just remember MADSPM

MA means when you see the MULTIPLICATION sign, ADD the exponents

• y² x y³ = y²⁺³ = y⁵

DS means when you see the DIVISION sign, SUBTRACT the exponents

• y⁵/y² = y^5-2 = y³

PM means when you see the exponent raised to a POWER, MULTIPLY the exponents

• (y²)³ = y^2x3 = y⁶

• This is really easily confused with multiplication so watch out!

BE CAREFUL! These rules do not apply to the ADDITION or SUBTRACTION of exponents

• 2² +2³ = (2 x 2) + (2 x 2 x 2) = 12

• 2⁵ = (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2) = 32
