Tropic Levels Lesson

Multiple Choice

The system that contains all living things on Earth.

• Biosphere

• Atmoshpere

• Hydrosphere

• Geosphere

Multiple Choice

Groups of different species that live together in a defined area make up a(an)

• population.
• community.
• ecosystem.
• biosphere.

Multiple Choice

What is biodiversity?

• The different ways species reproduce

• The degree of variation of life on Earth

• A way to describe similarities between different species

• The process of creating new species

Multiple Choice

The arrows in a food chain or web represents what?

• They point to the organism that is being eaten.
• It shows how sunlight flows within an ecosystem.
• They show what direction the energy is flowing between organisms.
• They represent how water is transferred within a habitat.

Multiple Choice

Trophic levels are represented by

• squares
• circles
• pyramids
• lines

Multiple Choice

The first organism in a food chain is ALWAYS a:

• producer

• consumer

• decomposer

• Any of the above

Multiple Choice

The grass is on which trophic level?

• 1st

• 2nd

• 3rd

• 4th

Multiple Choice

The word "primary" means "first."

If that's true, what does primary consumer mean?

Hint: look carefully at the food chain!

• the first organism in a food chain

• the first organism that consumes something else for energy

Multiple Choice

What kind of organisms are usually at the top of the food chain?

• producers

• herbivores

• omnivores

• carnivores

Multiple Choice

How much energy is transferred between trophic levels?

• 25%

• 20%

• 10%

• 90%

Multiple Choice

In the energy pyramid here, how much of the energy in each level gets lost as heat or used by the organism for survival?

• 80%
• 90%
• 10%
• 20%
