Covalent Bonding

2
Labelling
Match the following
covalent bond
chemical formula
molecule
chemical bond
valence electron
3
Carbon and Hydrogen
Carbon and hydrogen form the molecule methane, or CH4.
The carbon atom satisfies the octet rule because it now has 8 valence electrons.
Each hydrogen now has 2 valence electrons. Remember that hydrogen is an exception to the octet rule. Hydrogen is stable with 2 valence electrons.
The structural formula for methane substitutes lines for the shared pairs of electrons.
4
Oxygen and Iodine
Oxygen can form 2 bonds to create pairs for its 2 lone electrons. The chemical formula of the molecule is OI2
Both of the models shown are correct Lewis diagrams for this molecule. There are other ways to draw this model, as well.
5
Sulfur and Fluorine
Sulfur has 6 valence electrons, so it will form 2 covalent bonds to satisfy the octet rule. The chemical formula of the molecule is SF2
Both of the models shown are correct Lewis diagrams for this molecule.
6
Draw
What is the atomic number of Strontium?
7
Draw
Which equation correctly shows you how to calculate the number of neutrons in an atom?
8
Draw
Which element has the atomic symbol S?
Use your periodic table.
9
Draw
Circle aluminum's atomic mass.
10
Multiple Choice
Look at the image. What do the group numbers, or columns, tell you about each element?
number of protons
number of neutrons
number of valence electrons
the order they were discovered
11
Categorize
carbon
silicon
phosphorus
oxygen
chlorine
iodine
Classify each element according to the number of valence electrons the element contains.
Hint: Look at the columns (Groups)
13
Draw
Covalent bonds are weak attractive forces that form when atoms share electrons with each other.
