Career Opportunities in IT
The IT field is one of the fastest-growing career fields in the world.
IT skills are essential in all industries and are necessary for many different job roles.
Employers are looking for people with a bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, management information systems, or an equivalent field.
3
Career Opportunities in IT
Beyond technical knowledge, employers also want people with strong interpersonal, business, and project management skills.
Because technology changes so fast, it's important to keep your skills current through continuing education and professional certifications like CIW, A+, Network+, or Security+.
4
Conducting a Job Search
You can explore career opportunities by:
Attending job fairs.
Networking with professionals on sites like LinkedIn.
Visiting employment agencies.
Exploring company websites.
Using online job search engines.
Online job search sites like Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn are great places to find job listings and research careers in the IT industry.
5
Creating a Resume
A resume is a summary of your skills and work history. You can create different types of resumes depending on how you plan to send it.
Formatted Resumes: These are created with a word-processing program like Microsoft Word. They are visually appealing, but the formatting can sometimes be inconsistent on different computers. They are also vulnerable to viruses when sent as email attachments.
6
Creating a Resume
Text Resumes (also known as Plaintext or ASCII): These contain little formatting and are designed to be entered into online databases and applicant-tracking systems. They are not vulnerable to viruses and can be read by any program.
Rich Text Format (RTF) Resumes: These combine the best of formatted and text resumes. They allow for some formatting and can be read by many programs on various platforms.
7
Creating a Resume
Portable Document Format (PDF) Resumes: These are compatible with all computer platforms and are not vulnerable to viruses. They look identical to the original formatted document on any computer. * HTML Resumes: These are created as web pages and can be posted online. They can be accessed by employers at any time and can include links to other documents, graphics, and photos.
8
Communicating Non Technical Issues
As an IT professional, you must be able to explain complex technical concepts to people who aren't technical, like end users and managers.
This is especially important for help desk technicians who need to understand a user's problem and explain a solution in simple terms.
You must also be able to justify IT-related expenses to management by explaining the Return on Investment (ROI). You'll need to show how a new piece of hardware or software will benefit the company, for example, by increasing productivity or improving security.
9
Technology Adoption Models
New technologies are adopted over time. There are three schools of thought that describe how this happens:
Paradigm shifts: This is when accepted beliefs about a particular subject are questioned or discarded, and new ideas or worldviews take their place.
10
Technology Adoption Models
Technology adoption life cycle: This is a sociological model that describes the process by which a new technology is adopted, from innovators to laggards.
