Используется для фоновых, продолжающихся действий в прошлом (например: I was reading when he arrived). Подчеркивает, что действие шло в определённый момент/время.

was/were + V-ing

Past continuous (прошедшее длительное)

Показывает действие, которое завершилось раньше другого события в прошлом (раньше другого прошедшего момента).

had + V (past participle)

Past perfect (прошедшее совершённое)

​When I arrived at the station, the train had already left.

used to + base verb (в письменной форме — «used to play», «used to speak»). При отрицании чаще: didn’t use to + base verb (не didn’t used to).

Выражает привычки или состояния в прошлом, которые больше не соответствуют действительности
(например: I used to live in Paris).
