Our writing goal:

Make a claim about theme (the big idea of the story) in "The Necklace". Support your claim with evidence from the setting, plot, and characters in the text.

We will be writing a short essay about "The Necklace".

Claim

The claim is what you are saying about the topic. Maybe you are saying the topic is important, is wrong, is fun. This is where you get to put a little of your opinion in.

Your claim should be something that you have to prove and someone could disagree with. It shouldn't be a basic fact.

Good Claim: Dogs are a great pet.
Bad Claim: Dogs are animals.
That is just a fact that could not be disputed and would not need to be supported with more facts.

Points

  • Your points are what you are going to use to prove what you said in your claim.

  • It's what you read in "The Necklace".

    • This is where you pull sentences or refer to paragraphs from the story.

    • It is evidence to back you up.

  • Your points should not be your opinion.

How to write a paragraph

  • 5 sentences

  • A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark (period, question mark, exclamation point, etc)

  • A complete sentence has a subject and a verb

  • An incomplete sentence is missing either the subject or the verb and is called a sentence fragment

  • Ex. The dog ran outside

    • Subject= the dog, Verb= ran

  • Ex. The teacher was at school.

    • Subject= the teacher, Verb= was

  • You need BOTH for a complete sentence, otherwise it is a fragment

​What is an essay?

An essay is...

a piece of writing that usually has five or more paragraphs. An essay is written about one topic that has several main points. The main points are mentioned the first paragraph (the introduction) and supported in body paragraphs. The conclusion is the last paragraph.
