REORDER QUESTION
3 mins • 1 pt
Reorder the following summaries from chapters 48-51 of Born Behind Bars. Put them in chronological order. Chronological order means putting events in the order they happened, from first to last.
Read through each option.
A mob approaches, shouting for Tamils to get out. Kabir, Rani, and the shopkeeper scramble to hide. Rani climbs onto the roof with Kabir, and together they try to scare the mob away. Kabir feeds Rani words in Kannada to shout like a prophecy, and Jay the parrot echoes them, frightening some of the attackers. But one man climbs up, forcing Kabir to stomp on his fingers to protect Rani. Just as the danger peaks, police sirens wail, and the mob is trapped, along with Kabir and Rani.
Kabir struggles through a sleepless night in the tree. In the morning, he insists they follow the man again. They track him to his shop, where Kabir nervously tries to ask if he knows his grandfather, Khan. The man says no, leaving Kabir disappointed and fighting back tears. Just then, angry chants from a mob begin to grow louder in the distance.
Kabir and Rani spy on the man they think could be Kabir’s uncle. Through the window, Kabir watches a joyful family eating dinner and sharing stories. At first, Kabir hopes this man is family, but when he hears them speaking Tamil instead of Kannada, he feels crushed. The warmth of the family only deepens Kabir’s longing for Amma and his wish for belonging, but he realizes he does not fit there.
Rani finds a tree near a lake where they can stay hidden. They eat roasted peanuts for dinner, and Kabir reflects on Amma, missing her and trying to be stronger. Rani reminds him that sometimes you have to fight back against life’s difficulties. Kabir decides that in Bengaluru, he must take responsibility and not just depend on others.
