Nucleic acids, DNA and RNA, are organic macromolecules essential for genetic information and protein synthesis. DNA, found in chromosomes, contains genes that dictate organism traits and functions. RNA aids in protein assembly. Both contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Nucleotides, the building blocks of nucleic acids, consist of a phosphate group, a pentose sugar, and a nitrogenous base. DNA's bases are adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine, while RNA has uracil instead of thymine. DNA is double-stranded, linked by hydrogen bonds, whereas RNA is single-stranded.
