How to build intrinsic motivation in students
Some students throw themselves into learning with no prompting. Others will do exactly what's required for the grade, nothing more, nothing less. The difference usually isn't ability. It's intrinsic motivation: the internal drive that makes learning feel worth doing on its own. Building it is one of the most valuable things a teacher can do, and there's decades of research showing exactly how.
What is intrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic motivation is the drive to engage in an activity for its own inherent rewards rather than for external incentives like grades, prizes, or approval. A student completing homework only because it's graded is responding to extrinsic motivation.
