Target Heart Rate

  • This is the number of beats per minute you want to achieve in your workout THR = .85(220-age)For a middle school student, that's around 176bpm.

  • To find it, take 220, subtract your age.  Then take that number (which is your MAX heart rate), and multiply it by .85.

Checking Your Heart Rate

  • take two fingers, and find your pulse (on your carotid artery (neck) or radial artery (wrist) 

  • Count the number of beats for 15 seconds

  • Take that number and multiply by 4 to get your beats per minute (bpm)

  • You can also use a fitness tracker like a fitbit or smartwatch

  • 44 will get you at 85% of your max.

  • For other goals, you may shoot for only 60% or 70%, depending on your fitness level or activity.
