Formal and informal

in formal English we use prepositions before relative pronouns

we can say:

Was that the restaurant to which we normally go?     or

Electronics is a subject about which I know very little.      or

John is the person from whom I obtained the information.

20

Formal and informal

In Informal situations we would use that rather than which or who:

The man that spoke to me was very worried

rather than

The man who spoke to me was very worried

or we can omit it completely:

The jacket Fred usually wears is a tennis blazer.

rather than

The jacket that Fred usually wears is a tennis blazer.

21

Formal and informal

Note: We cannot use who or that after a preposition.

But it does apply for whom, which, and whose:

He wrecked the car for which he had paid a fortune.

He was a man for whom everybody had great respect.

The team signed then the young Maradona, in whose skills everybody had their hopes
