What is ADC and why do we need to use ADC?

​Monitoring Application

• ​Use of sensor and microprocessor to "monitor" physical environment

• Sensor reads data continuously, send to microprocessor, and:

  • Microprocessor identify abnormality in data (e.g. Smoke detector), and/or;

  • ​Microprocessor simply records the data​

​Example: Fire alarm system

Computer:​

IF (button pressed)

OR

(smoke detected)

THEN

​ Alarm, Report through network

​Preset value

• ​A particular threshold value or a range of value

• Usually inputted by user

• ​Determine when is the microprocessor need to take action

• ​e.g. Heart rate for heart rate monitor, ambient light intensity in auto street lamp, temperature in an AC etc.

​Control Application

• Very similar to monitoring application except:

• Depending on sensor readings, the actions from actuators will alter the environment;

• ​such that the sensor readings will be affected by the output from actuator
