"Could" can be used for different reasons.
Some examples:

Heavy rain could cause a flood.
Salem could speak English when he was four years old.
We could see a movie or go out for dinner.
Could you open the window, please?
I could wake up earlier if I had an alarm clock.

In this lesson, we will only focus on 'could' for possibility.
In this way, could has the same meaning as might, may or maybe.
Example:
John is not at work today.
He could be sick. = He might be sick. = He may be sick.
