2
Respiratory System
Use the notes, slides and videos to learn about the respiratory system.
3
Open Ended
What is the difference between RESPIRATION and BREATHING.
4
RESPIRATION vs BREATHING
Breathing is a biophysical process that involves the exchange of gases through inhalation and exhalation
Respiration is a biochemical process to release energy from organic compounds which are then used for performing different physical activities.
5
6
Structure of the human respiratory system
Pharynx- is part of the conducting zone for air into the lungs.Main function is to warm and humidify air before it reaches the lungs.
Larynx- to protect the airway from choking on material in the throat. To regulate the flow of air into our lungs The production of sounds used for speech.
7
Structure of the human respiratory system
Trachea- also called the windpipe, cartilaginous tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs
Bronchi- the airways that lead from the trachea into the lungs
8
Structure of the human respiratory system
Alveoli- where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out. also called as air sac.
Diaphragm- located below the lungs, is the major muscle of respiration.

Definition of terms:
Respiration: a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
Gas exchange: It is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, and the elimination of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs.
Diffusion: the process of a substance spreading out to evenly fill its container or environment.
16

Gas Exchange
Diffusion
18
We now know that…
Respiratory system includes trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm, and the muscles between the ribs.
Gas exchange is the diffusion of gases into and out of the body
Oxygen diffuses from the air sacs into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses the other way.
Thin walls of air sacs help gas exchange to take place quickly.
19
Lesson objective
To learn about organs that make up human nervous system.
20
Nervous system
The nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, learning, and memory.
21
Nervous System is made up of:
Brain
Spinal cord
Nerves
Sensory organs
22
How does the brain send messages to the body?
The brain is the body's control centre: it sends messages to your body through a network of nerves called “the nervous system”, which controls your muscles, so that you can walk, run and move around. The nervous system extends through your body from your spinal cord, which runs from your brain down your backbone.

Brain
the control center of your body
send and receives signals to and from your nerves
controls all the organs
34
Spinal Cord
Connects your brain to the rest of your nerves in your body
Can cause paralysis if it's damaged
35
Nerves
sense your internal and external surroundings
communicate information between your brain, spinal cord, and muscles
control your voluntary and involuntary muscle movement
