2D Shape Areas

2D shapes are shapes with two
dimensions, such as width and
height.

An example of a 2D shape is a
rectangle or a circle. 2D shapes
are flat and cannot be physically
held, because they have no depth;
a 2D shape is completely flat.

2D Shape Areas

The area of a figure is the number of unit squares

that cover the surface of a closed 2D shape

2D Shape Areas

When finding the area for two
dimensional shapes, we have
formulas that help us to find the
area. Depending on the shape
depends on which formula we use.

2D Shape Areas - Example

Using the formula for a
rectangle, we multiply
the length by the width.

3 * 3 = 9

2D Shape Areas - Example

Using the formula
for a triangle, it is a
little bit different.

2D Shape Areas - Example

Notice how if we count all
the squares in the 6 by 3
space, the triangle is only
taking up half of that
space.

2D Shape Areas - Example

Therefore, we only want
half of the space. We still
multiply the length by the
width, but since we only
want half of it, we must
also multiply by 1/2.
