CLASSIFYING MATTER:

ELEMENTS,

COMPOUNDS, AND
MIXTURES REVIEW

3

4

media

(1)PURE SUBSTANCES

A sample of matter that has definite
chemical and physical properties.

5

media

(2)ATOMS

The smallest unit of an element
that maintains the properties
of that element. An atom is a
single building block of an
element. All matter is made up
of atoms.

6

media

(3)ELEMENTS

Pure substances made up of only one type of
atom. Elements are listed on the Periodic
Table.

7

media

(4) MOLECULES

Composed of two or more atoms that
are joined by chemical bonds.

Molecule can be made up of elements of the

same type – Ex: O2, H2, N2

Molecules can also be made up of different

types of elements – Ex: C6H12O6, H2O, NaCl

8

media

Elements represented in a Chemical Formula only have ONE Capital Letter.

9

media

(5)COMPOUNDS

Pure substance composed of two or more
different elements joined by chemical bonds.
Made of elements in a specific ratio

that is always the same

Has a chemical formula
Can only be separated by chemical means,
not physically
Compounds have their own physical and
chemical properties that are different from
other substances

10

media

Compounds represented in a Chemical Formulas have TWO OR MORE Capital Letters.

they are always metals

2

they can be found on the periodic table

3

They are made up of two or more different elements

15

Counting Atoms in a Chemical Formula

16

17

Chemical Formulas

Chemical Formulas are a shorthand way to communicate the parts of a molecule.

Examples: H2O, NaCl, CO2

18

Subscrips

Subscripts are the small lowered numbers used to identify how many atoms of a particular element are in a chemical formula.

Examples: H2O = 2 hydrogen atoms + 1 oxygen atom

               CO2 = 1 carbon atom + 2 oxygen atoms

              C6H12O6 = 6 carbon atoms + 12 hydrogen atoms + 6 oxygen atoms

19

Coefficients

Coefficients are the numbers in front of a chemical formula to indicate the number of molecules of a compound.

Examples: 2 H2O = 2 x 2 hydrogen atoms + 2 x 1 oxygen atom

                   = 4 hydrogen atoms + 2 oxygen atoms

Physical vs. Chemical Changes

26

27

media

PHYSICAL CHANGE

Physical change: a change that occurs

that does not change the identity of the
substance

Some common physical changes include:

28

media

SIGNS OF A PHYSICAL CHANGE

A physical change has occurred if it ONLY:

1.Changes size
2.Changes shape
3.Changes state of matter

29

media

CHEMICAL CHANGES

Chemical change: a change that occurs causing

the identity of the substance to change

In a chemical change where there is a chemical

reaction, a new substance is formed and energy
is either given off or absorbed.

30

media

SIGNS OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE

If it ALSO:

1.

Production of a gas (bubbles)

2. Changes temperature (without added heat/cooling source)

3. Forms a solid in a liquid - precipitate

4. Gives off light, heat, or electricity

5. Changes color

6. Reacts with Oxygen

7. Gives off a new odor
