What are chromosomes?

DNA contains genetic information and is located within the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. DNA coils tightly around histone proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin is a complex of DNA and protein that functions to package long DNA molecules into more compact and denser structures. This genetic information is bundled into packages called chromosomes. A

chromatid is one of the two identical halves of a chromosome that have been replicated in preparation for cell division. The two sister chromatids are joined at a constricted region of the chromosome called the centromere.

What is the cell cycle?

The cell cycle is a series of events that takes place as a cell grows and divides to make two new identical cells, called daughter cells. The stages of the cell cycle are divided into interphase and the mitotic phase. A cell spends most its time in interphase and interphase is broken down into three stages: G1, S, and G2. During the mitotic phase (M), the cell separates duplicated DNA into two sets, and divides its cytoplasm into two cell in a process called cytokinesis (C).
