Recommended Daily Amounts of Nutrients

2

1.You have now learned about nutrients and why they are so important for growth and good health.
2.You have also learned that there are guidelines about how much of different foods we should eat every day in order to grow properly and stay healthy, and
3.what happens if we do not eat a balanced diet

3

Dietary Reference Values (DRVs)

  • Guidelines are based on information compiled by scientists and health professionals. These experts have determined the necessary amounts of each nutrient for our bodies.

  • This information is called dietary reference values (DRVs).

4

Dietary Reference Values (DRVs)

  1. DRVs indicate the amount of energy and nutrient needs for various groups based on age and gender, including pregnant and lactating females.

  2. DRVs apply only to healthy individuals, not to those with diseases or health conditions, as nutrient and energy needs differ in such cases.

5

Dietary Reference Values (DRVs)

  1. DRVs are for guidance and represent the needs of an average person; they are particularly useful for those providing food in schools, hospitals, residential homes, and prisons- to make sure they provide nutritionally balanced meals

  2. DRVs aim to meet the needs of about 97% of a specific group.

6

Dietary Reference Values (DRVs)

  1. Food manufacturers and retailers often display DRVs as guideline daily amounts (GDAs) guideline daily amounts on product labels.

  2. A more detailed explanation of GDAs is usually provided elsewhere on the nutritional label.

Guideline daily amounts

Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs) are used to indicate the amount of nutrients (such as calories, fat, sugar, salt, etc.) that an average person should consume in a day. To calculate GDAs, manufacturers typically use standard reference values based on the needs of an average adult. Here's a general way to calculate GDAs:

8

  • Saturated fat: 20g/day

  • Carbohydrates: 260g/day

  • Sugars: 90g/day

  • Protein: 50g/day

  • Salt: 6g/day

These values can vary by region, so it's important to check the specific guidelines for your country or region.

GDAs are typically based on average daily nutritional requirements for a healthy adult. Common reference values include:

  • Calories: 2,000 kcal/day (for women) or 2,500 kcal/day (for men)

  • Total fat: 70g/day

1. Determine the daily recommended intake for each nutrient:

9

To calculate the GDA for each nutrient, divide the amount of the nutrient in a portion of the product by the total recommended daily intake for that nutrient and multiply by 100.

2. Calculate the percentage of the daily value for each nutrient:

Example for Calories:

If a product contains 250 calories per serving, and the recommended daily intake is 2,000 calories (for women):

So, the product provides 12.5% of the recommended daily calorie intake.
