Understand how to take
accurate measurements

Objective

3

media
media

When measuring length, first find the “0” in your ruler or measuring tape.
You should line up your object with the zero.

Measurement: Length

4

media
media

Extend your object straight over the ruler or measuring tape. Check your
units, in science we always use metric units, in this case centimeters (cm).

Record you rmeasurement

including decimal points

and units.

In this example: 5.3 cm

Measurement: Length

5

Multiple Choice

What SI unit is used to measure length?

When measuring a liquid we can use
a graduated cylinder. Transfer your
liquid into a graduated cylinder.
Observe at eyesight level.

You will see a curve in the liquid, this
is the meniscus. You will take the
measurement from under the
meniscus.

Measurement: Volume

9

media
media

To measure the volume of an
irregular object first place water in
your graduated cylinder. The water should be enough to cover your object. Record the volume.

Then insert your object into the graduated cylinder. Record the volume.

Finally subtract the volume of water,
to the volume of water + object, this
is the volume of your object.

Measurement: Volume

Measurement: mass

15

media

To measure the mass, first put your
object on the plate. Then adjust the
poise (see image above) starting by
the smallest, and moving up, you
might need to go back to the smaller
ones later.

Move the poises until it is balanced at
zero.

Add the measurement to complete
your measurement.

Measuring Temperature

1.
Submerge the bottom of the thermometer,
called the bulb, in the liquid to be measured.
Ensure that the bulb does not touch or get close
to any other material such as the sides or bottom of the fluid container; if it does, the thermometer
will be measuring the combined temperature of
more than one object, rather than the
temperature of the substance of interest.

19

Measuring Temperature

2. While holding the thermometer steady, give
the red liquid time to rise, fall, or stay at the
same level. An analog thermometer takes time to
adjust to its surroundings. Before we can read
out the measured temperature, the height of the
red liquid must not be changing at all.

20

media

Measuring Temperature

3. Holding the thermometer upright, we set our vision level
with the top of the red liquid. We avoid looking up or down at
the top of the liquid, because that can trick our eye into
seeing an incorrect level and recording an incorrect
temperature.
