Matter can be classified as either a pure substance or a mixture

Pure Substance

Has a set composition 

Is either an element or compound

Elements are made of a single type of atom while a compound is 2 or more types of atoms bonded together.

Mixtures

Made of 2 or more substances but not chemically bonded

Original substances can be separated by physical means

Can be heterogeneous or homogeneous
