ECOSYSTEM

2

Standard:

HS-LS2-1- Use mathematical and/or computational representations to support explanations of factors that affect carrying capacity of ecosystems ate different scale.

HS-LS2-6 Evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning that the complex interactions in ecosystems maintain relatively consistent numbers and types of organisms in stable conditions, but changing conditions may result in a new ecosystem.

3

Learning Intention:

Today I will:

  • Define what is an Ecosystem.

  • Determine the different levels of biological Interactions.

  • Make a list of some examples of both biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem.

4

Success Criteria:

I know I have it when I can:

  • Understand and clearly state the meaning of the Ecosystem and its components.

  • Properly state in orderly the levels of biological organization.

  • Know the difference between Biotic and Abiotic factors .

5

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL
ORGANIZATION

1. Organism 4. Ecosystem
2. Population 5. Biome
3. Community 6. Biosphere

6

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

The smallest simplest unit of organization is the organism. This is an individual living thing.

Example: a single zebra.

1. Organism

7

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

Refers to a members of same species living in the same area at the same time.

Example: All of the zebras in the herd , fish in the coral reef, pine trees in the forest

2. Population

8

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

All the different populations in the area that interact with each other in a specific area or habitat

Example: The zebras, wildebeests, insects, bacteria, all the other living things in the area makeup the community.

3. Community

9

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

A community or group of living organism that live in and interact with each other in a specific environment.

4. Ecosystem

10

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

Refers to an ecosystem over a large area with similar climate.

5. Biome

11

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION

All the biomes on earth. This is also the largest level. It encompass all ecosystem and their interactions with the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

6. Biosphere

14

Multiple Choice

Which of the following BEST describe a Biosphere?

1

Biosphere includes all biomes on earth. It encompass all ecosystem and their interactions with the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.

2

Biosphere includes all ecosystems on earth. It encompass all communities and their interactions with both hydrosphere and atmosphere.

3

Biosphere includes all biomes on earth. It encompass all ecosystem and their interactions with the both hydrosphere and atmosphere.

4

Biosphere includes all organism on earth. It encompass the population and their interactions with both hydrosphere and atmosphere.

COMPONENTS OF AN
ECOSYSTEM

1. Biotic Factors- These are the living things of within the ecosystem.

Example: Plants, animals, fungi, microorganism (bacteria)

19

COMPONENTS OF AN
ECOSYSTEM

1. Abiotic Factors- These are the non- living parts of the ecosystem that influence living organism.

Example: water, sunlight, temperature, soil, air, humidity

20

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is NOT an Abiotic Factor?

1

Soil

2

Water

3

Fungi

4

Rain

21

Multiple Choice

Why is Abiotic Factor a component in an ecosystem?

1

Abiotic factors like temperature, sunlight, and water availability create specific habitats.

2

All of the choices

3

Abiotic factors directly influence where different species can live and reproduce.

4

Abiotic factors influence how ecosystems function such as changes in temperature or rainfall which affect plant growth, animal migration, and even the rate of decomposition, impacting the overall structure and stability of the ecosystem.
