Eisenhower Decision Matrix
The Eisenhower Decision Matrix (also called the Urgent-Important Matrix) is a simple but powerful time management tool.
It helps people decide what to focus on first, what to plan for later, what to delegate, and what to ignore.
It’s named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who famously said:
“What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.”

🟦 The Four Quadrants
Quadrant | Category | Description | Example (Health Science Context) |
|---|---|---|---|
1️⃣ Do First | Important & Urgent | Tasks that must be done immediately. | Responding to a patient in distress, completing a report due today, calling 911. |
2️⃣ Schedule | Important & Not Urgent | Tasks that help you reach long-term goals; plan time to do them. | Studying for certification, reviewing patient education materials, organizing medical charts. |
3️⃣ Delegate | Not Important & Urgent | Tasks that are time-sensitive but not critical for you to do personally; can often be delegated. | Answering routine phone calls, confirming appointments, restocking supplies. |
4️⃣ Eliminate (Don’t Do) | Not Important & Not Urgent | Tasks that waste time and don’t help you reach goals. | Scrolling social media, chatting off-topic during work, checking personal emails. |
