If you are looking after a person with a bleeding wound, what should you do first?

• Wash the wound under running water

• Ask the casualty their medical history

• Get the equipment prepared and ready

• put on disposable latex or rubber gloves

To manage a casualty with suspected internal bleeding you should:

• Apply direct pressure over the suspected area

• Lay the person down, raise their legs and seek medical aid

• Give cold drinks and seek medical aid

• bandage firmly over the suspected area

As a last resort to control severe external bleeding a constrictive bandage may be applied. This should be removed after:

• 20 minutes

• 30minutes

• 45 minutes

• 10 minutes

When managing an alert, conscious casualty with shock you should:

• Raise the legs above heart level

• Place in a stable side position

• Give a warm drink containing sugar

• warm the casualty with many blankets

Dirty and penetrating wounds should be:

• Cleaned for 5-10 minutes

• Soaked in antiseptic then left covered

• Probed to find any foreign bodies

• Seen by a doctor as soon as possible

Which sign is present when a casualty is in shock? The

• skin is warm

• pulse is strong

• breathing is fast

• pulse is slow

The immediate treatment of external bleeding is

• Use a constrictive bandage until controlled

• Apply direct pressure to the site of bleeding

• Cover the wound with a sterile non stick dressing

• apply pressure to the pressure points

A casualty has an amputated limb. Your priority is to:

• Preserve the amputated part

• Control the bleeding

• Estimate the blood loss

• Apply antiseptic to the wound

The initial signs of a casualty suffering from shock include:

• Flushed dry skin

• Bluish coloured legs

• Restlessness and disorientation

• Bluish or grey tinge to face, fingernails and lips

To minimise infection when managing an open wound, whenever possible you should:

• Apply a dressing before attempting to control bleeding

• Use any covering you can find

• Wash your hands before and after management

• Swab the wound with antiseptic as a priority
