Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is not easily visible except during twilight. It completes three rotations for every two orbits around the Sun. Mercury has a high orbital eccentricity and is nearly tidally locked to the Sun. Despite being the smallest planet, it is the second densest, composed mainly of heavy metals. Its surface features include wrinkles and craters, with the largest being the Caloris Basin. Mercury's core is believed to be molten, and it experiences extreme temperature variations due to its lack of atmosphere. The planet's discovery dates back to the Sumerians, and its atmosphere is constantly replenished by solar winds.
