In 8th grade, the focus shifts to bivariate data and linear functions. Students learn to construct and interpret scatter plots, looking for patterns like clustering, outliers, and positive or negative association. Introduce it as a "visual average" of the data. Have students use a clear ruler or a piece of spaghetti to find a line that passes through the middle of the data points, with roughly an equal number of points above and below it. Emphasize that the line should capture the overall trend, not necessarily connect any specific data points.

The most significant error is confusing correlation with causation. Students see a strong association between two variables on a scatter plot and incorrectly conclude that one variable causes the other. It is critical to discuss examples where a third, unobserved variable is the actual cause.

Go beyond simple interpretation. Provide a scatter plot and ask students to draw a reasonable line of best fit, write an equation for their line, and then use that equation to make a prediction for a value not shown in the original data. This connects the visual representation to an algebraic model.
