The North Carolina CTE Framework

Four Proof of Learning types, 16 career clusters, and a transition to the Advance CTE Framework in 2026–27.

Proof of Learning (POL)

Four POL Types

Every NC CTE course requires a Proof of Learning. There are four types:

  • CTE State Assessments — Standardized by NC DPI
  • Performance-Based Measurements — Hands-on demonstrations
  • Local Assessments — District-developed
  • Credentials — Industry certifications aligned to 80%+ of course standards
Advance CTE Transition

New Framework 2026–27

Beginning 2026–27, NC CTE transitions from 16 clusters to the Advance CTE Framework: 14 Clusters and 72 Sub-Clusters. All courses will be realigned. Assessment tools must update their standards mappings.

Wayground commits to updating its standards crosswalks within 60 days of implementation and immediately supporting the new cluster structure in its AI assessment generator.

Supported NC Credentials

Credentials meeting the 80% alignment rule can serve as the Proof of Learning for their aligned course.

NC CTE Accountability & Wayground's Role

Credential Attainment Is the Core Metric

NC's record 382,964 credentials in 2024–25 demonstrate the state's emphasis on this outcome. Districts that invest in tools increasing credential attainment directly improve accountability outcomes. Wayground's gamified prep drives the practice that produces credential-passing students.

Complementing Schoolnet, Not Replacing It

NC DPI provides Schoolnet with item banks for CTE State Assessment POLs. Wayground adds gamified certification prep, AI-generated assessments, 25+ accommodations, and readiness reporting covering both credential attainment and POL preparation — capabilities Schoolnet does not offer.

Readiness Reporting Aligned to NC Credential Tiers

Wayground's reports surface credential readiness by student and course, track POL preparation progress, and organize data by NC's Tier 1/2/3 credential classification — giving CTE directors the data they need to sustain the state's record-breaking credential attainment trajectory.

Why North Carolina Districts Choose Wayground

Supporting Record-Breaking Credential Attainment

NC CTE is on an upward trajectory — a 59% attainment rate and 6.9% year-over-year growth. Wayground's engaging, gamified certification prep helps sustain this momentum by driving higher practice volume and better-prepared students heading into credential exams.

Framework Transition Ready

The 2026–27 Advance CTE Framework transition is the biggest NC CTE change in years. Assessment tools that can't adapt will become misaligned overnight. Wayground's AI assessment generator will support the new 14-cluster, 72-sub-cluster structure on Day 1, and standards crosswalks update within 60 days.

Teachers Already Use Wayground

The vast majority of North Carolina schools already have Wayground. Adding CTE certification prep is an expansion of an existing tool — not a new procurement process, not new teacher training, not a new login.

Gamification Drives the Practice That Earns Credentials

Credential attainment requires consistent practice volume. Wayground's game mechanics — leaderboards, streaks, timed challenges — turn that practice into something students choose to do. Higher practice volume translates directly to higher credential pass rates.
