PERO, SINO, & SINO QUE

How to tell the difference and when to use each

So far, you've probaly only used "pero" to say "but..." in Spanish...

BUT (see what I did there?) there are actually 3 different words to express 3 slightly different situations:

PERO:

We use PERO to give an explanation or an excuse for something:

EJEMPLOS:

• Quiero ir al cine ... PERO ... tengo que hacer mi tarea.

• No me gusta comer verduras ... PERO ... son buenas para la salud.

• La fiesta parece muy divertida ... PERO ... no tengo un coche para ir.

**If you can replace "but" with "however" (sin embargo), then you should use PERO.

SINO:

We use sino when we want to contrast two ideas. If you can say "but rather" or "but instead", you will use sino.

**IMPORTANT: The first part of your sentence is ALWAYS negative when you use sino!

EJEMPLOS:

• No me gustan los Yankees, sino los Mets.

• El español no es difícil, sino fácil.

• José no compró rosas amarillas, sino rosas blancas.

SINO QUE:

Good news! SINO QUE is exactly the same as SINO, except you use it with two conjugated verbs:

EJEMPLOS:

• No vamos a tomar un examen hoy, sino que jugar Kahoot.

• Normalmente no me gusta hablar por teléfono, sino que mandar textos.

• A Julia no le gusta levantar pesas en el gimnasio, sino que tomar clases de Zumba.

• ​If the first statement is positive you need to use pero.

• If you can replace “but” with “however” (sin embargo), you need to use pero.​

• If you can replace “but” with "but instead" or “on the contrary,” (por el contrario) you need to use sino

• ​If you can replace "but" with "but instead" or "on the contrary," (por el contrario), and you have two conjugated verbs, you need to use sino que.
