Adverbs of Manner and Prepositions of Movement

3

Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens. They are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object.

To make adverbs of manner, we usually add -ly to the adjective. For example,

  • quick – quickly

  • careful – carefully

  • gentle – gently

When an adjective ends in -y we change the -y to -i then add -ly. For example,

  • happy – happily

  • greedy – greedily

  • easy – easily

Prepositions of movement show movement from one place to another place. These prepositions always describe movement and we usually use them with verbs of motion.

The most common preposition of movement is the preposition to, which describes movement in the direction of something

Difference between Can/Could and May Might

8

Can and May

Both "may" and "can" are used to indicate that something is allowed, but "may" is more formal: "You may leave whenever you like" is more formal than "You can go whenever you want to." Children are often taught that only "may" is used for permission, and that "can" is used only for ability.

"May I use the bathroom"

"Can I use the bathroom"

the word 'can' is used when someone has the ability to do something, or when you are allowed to do something. On the other hand, may is used to discuss possibility or happenings in the future

9

The main difference between Could and Might is that "could" is used to say about something or some event or action that is possible or has a great possibility of happening, whereas 'might' is used when there are few possibilities of occurrence of an event.

"She could go there"

"She might go there"
