and Adjectives
French is a Romance language, which
is a language derived from Latin.
Other Romance languages are
Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and
Romanian. In Romance languages
there is agreement between nouns
and adjectives.

What is agreement?
▪ In French,
agreement is gender, either masculine or
feminine.
▪ Feminine nouns must have feminine forms of
adjectives.
▪ Masculine nouns must have masculine
adjectives.

Look at the spelling of the adjectives with
masculine nouns and with feminine nouns.

How did the pronunciation change?
The final consonant in the masculine
form of the adjective is silent.
When the e is added to make the
adjective feminine, the consonant is
no longer silent.
