A homogeneous material has a uniform composition and appearance. Individual substances that constitute a homogeneous mixture cannot be visually differentiated.
A heterogeneous material is made of two or more substances that can be distinctly observed, and even separated relatively easily. (like taking tomatoes out of a salad or raisins out of raisin bran.)
4
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is NOT homogenous?
air
dirt
fresh, black hot coffee
all of these are homogenous
5
Multiple Choice
Why is raisin bran considered heterogenous?
It contains sugar
It has two or more substances that can be distinctly observed and even separated from the mixture
It has a uniform composition and appearance.
It cannot be visually differentiated
6
Multiple Select
Which of the following are heterogenous?
sausage and mushroom pizza
wood
dirt
lucky charms
air
7
Categorize
oxygen
silver
iron
water
carbon dioxide
sugar
air
Big Mac
seawater
chocolate sundae
ice
hydrogen
Organize these options into the right categories!
8
Categorize
color
density
boils at 450
burns easily
not affected by acids
reacts violently with chlorine
good conductivity
high ph
9
Physical Properties
do not change the chemical nature of the matter.
readily observable
help understand how the substance will behave under various conditions
10
Examples of physical properties:
magnetism
boiling and freezing and melting point
malleability
measurable qualities: density, mass, and volume
viscosity
size and shape and color
texture
11
Chemical Properties
change the chemical nature of matter and are only seen during a chemical reaction
12
Examples of Chemical Properties
combustibility (the energy released when it burns completely)
reactivity (reacting with other chemicals- may form a precipitate or color change)
Ph (measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution)
flammability (how likely to burn)
