Key Characteristics of Data

Reliability
Validity
Relevance
Time-frame
Accessibility
Quality
Cost-effectiveness
Appropriateness

18

media

05/11/2023

Reliability

How trustworthy is the data?

Where did we get it from? How trusted and
verified is the source?

Reliable data helps to stop poor decision
making.

19

media

Validity

Data validity is basically making sure data is as
expected when storing it.

A good example is emails. If someone give an
email does is follow the usual format
Name@Cirencester.ac.uk or has it been inputted
incorrectly?

Non-valid data can cause errors when searching
or analysing data

20

media

05/11/2023

Relevance

How relevant is the data to what I’m trying to
answer?

Does someone’s shoe size help me understand
their GCSE results?

Relevant data stops people collecting too much
and losing the detail

21

media

05/11/2023

Time frame

Is the data up to date and current?

For example, is someone’s address still correct?
Is that their contact number?

Timely data helps companies make current and
modern decisions

22

media

Accessibility

Having lots of data is great, but people need to
be able to understand and access it.

Having accessible data helps different
departments within a business use data to
inform their practices and productivity.

23

media

05/11/2023

Quality

Quality data has everything we need about that
information. Have all the necessary fields of
information been given?

Someone may have given me their postcode, but
without their house number I can’t send them
information.

24

media

Cost effectiveness

Keeping up-to-date data is important, but there
is a cost for updating and collecting data.

Consider how often a company needs to check
or collect data – would an annual update be
more appropriate than a daily phone call?

Different data will have different levels of cost
effectiveness.

25

media

Appropriateness

Data collection is a sensitive subject for most.
Businesses and individuals should only collect
data that they actually need to inform their
decisions and support their customer base.

I don’t need to know the inside leg
measurement of your goldfish’s cousin.

26
