7.PS1.1
Develop and use models to illustrate the structure of atoms, including the subatomic particles with their relative positions and charge
I can use historical models of the Atom to explain how the protons, neutrons, and electrons behave in reference to their charges and attractions.
2
Models are used in science as a way to represent what we cannot see. They help us
work with, visualize, and understand scientific concepts. However, models are constantly changing as we develop new technology and continue to make advancements. We are going to study the atom in this unit, and it is important to learn about the process of developing our most current model.

Things we still believe from Dalton:
Dalton believed that elements would each have their own type of atoms that were exactly alike. He thought they were round balls that could not break down any smaller.
Dalton believed that atoms were not able to be destroyed.

Electrons could not be seen when they were discovered. How could Thompson know they were there?
8
On the next slide you will go to an exploration website to try a simulation of the Cathode Ray Tube. This tube was used in the early television sets. This tube helped Thompson understand the movement he saw in his cathode ray tube.
