Does two very important things:

  • brings oxygen into our bodies, which our cells need to function properly

  • helps us get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular respiration

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

3

to provide oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the body

4

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is released from the body when we exhale.

NASAL CAVITY

  • warms

  • moisturizes

  • filters air

6

The windpipe is also called

trachea

media

7

The nose has hairs that catch debris to prevent it from being inhaled into the lungs.
The nasal cavity moistens the air to also aid in catching debris.

RESPIRATION vs BREATHING

  • Breathing is a biophysical process that involves the exchange of gases through inhalation and exhalation

  • Respiration is a biochemical process to release energy from organic compounds which are then used for performing different physical activities.

26

We now know that…

  • Respiratory system includes trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm, and the muscles between the ribs.

  • Gas exchange is the diffusion of gases into and out of the body

  • Oxygen diffuses from the air sacs into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses the other way.

  • Thin walls of air sacs help gas exchange to take place quickly.
