The social-ecological model:

• has four layers and can be represented like a target

• contains layers of Individual, Social environment, Physical environment and Policy

• uses a 'systems thinking' approach

• can be applied to promote physical activity

The Individual layer of the social-ecological model incorporates:

• Knowledge and level of education, Attitudes and beliefs

• Perceived barriers and Motivation and enjoyment

• Motor skills, Age and gender

• SES and Injuries and disabilities

• Self-efficacy (level of belief in ability to succeed)

The Social environment layer of the social-ecological model incorporates:

• Family and Peers

• Institutions and organisations,

• Healthcare professionals and educators, SES in community

• Community norms and cultural background

• Social support

The Physical environment layer of the social-ecological model incorporates:

• Natural factors

• Availability and access to sport and recreation facilities

• Aesthetics and Safety

• Community design and public transport

The Policy layer of the social-ecological model incorporates:

• Urban planning policies

• Education policies

• Workplace policies

• Funding policies

Core concepts of the social-ecological model incorporate:

• 1 Multiple factors influence behaviour

• 2 Environments are multidimensional and complex

• 3 human-environment interactions can be described at varying levels of organisation

• 4 Interrelationships between people and their environment are dynamic

Settings that the Social-ecological model can be used in include:

• Schools

• Workplaces

• Community

The Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model incorporates:

• Predisposing factors that reflect the desire and interest to be active (Am I able? Self-efficacy Is it worth it? Enjoyment)

• Enabling factors that allow young people to be active (fitness, skills and environment)

• Reinforcing factors that support a child or adolescent to be active (Family, peers coaches)

• Personal demographics (Age, gender, SES and Ethnicity)
