From Passive Screens to Active Learning: Wayground at European International School

An IB School Elevating Engagement and Efficiency

European International School (EIS) in Ho Chi Minh City is a full IB World School serving around 800 students across PYP, MYP, and DP. As part of the Inspired group of 100 plus schools, EIS emphasizes efficient teaching practices and meaningful student engagement.

Teachers needed a faster way to check understanding, reduce marking time, and keep students active during lessons. Traditional worksheets and long stretches of presentation led to passive screen time and uneven participation, especially from quieter learners.

Wayground offered a modern, interactive solution that aligned with EIS’s vision for productive, student-centred classrooms.

A Single Teacher’s Experiment That Spread Across a Whole School

Akash Bendran first used Quizizz (now Wayground) while teaching in China as a simple way to gauge understanding without heavy marking. When he joined EIS as a Head of Department, he introduced it to his team and encouraged exploration.

Teachers began using Wayground for roughly 30 percent of their teaching, and its impact became evident. Akash proposed a schoolwide rollout, leadership approved, and Wayground expanded beyond his department. Today, most Heads of Department use it, and Akash meets with them every two months to share usage insights and new practices.

Adoption is strongest in science, social sciences, and languages, with continued growth across the school.

Turning Lessons Into Active Learning Moments

At EIS, Wayground is used primarily for formative assessment and interactive instruction. Instead of long periods of passive listening, teachers use Wayground to weave short questions into their lessons, prompting students to respond and stay involved from start to finish.

In a typical class of 20 to 22 students, Akash sees around 20 students participating actively. Students have expressed a clear preference for Wayground based activities and often request more practice opportunities.

Wayground also supports quieter learners who may not speak up in discussions but engage readily through digital responses.

A teacher shared,

“Wayground has the right balance of gamified elements and Accommodations to motivate all students.”

Teaching Made More Efficient and Creative

To reduce planning time, Akash developed a workflow where teachers build simple slides elsewhere, import them into Wayground, and then enhance them with questions, interactions, and videos. He has shared this process in professional development sessions so any teacher can adopt it without additional workload.

Akash links Wayground directly to improvements in “teacher efficiency,” “creativity and interactiveness,” and overall student engagement. Students increasingly ask for Wayground activities, especially when they can attempt quizzes multiple times.

Supporting ESL, Languages, and Learning Support

EIS serves a diverse student body, and different teams use Wayground to meet varied instructional needs.

  • ESL and language teachers rely on accommodations to adapt pacing and visibility for learners.
  • Learning support staff use Wayground one or two times a week with identified students in science and maths to reinforce content and build confidence.
  • Subjects like maths, which follow tighter pacing requirements, use Wayground selectively but still benefit from its content creation tools.

This flexible use ensures each department applies Wayground where it brings the most value.

A Platform That Fits Into the School’s Daily Flow

EIS integrates Wayground into its LMS, Throttle, giving students a central place to access activities. Teachers regularly use Wayground to monitor learning progress, guide discussions, and make lessons more responsive.

Most importantly, Wayground is now part of everyday instruction. Teachers collaborate more, share resources, and refine their use of the platform over time.

Efficiency, Engagement, and a Clear Path Forward

Wayground has helped European International School create more interactive, time efficient, and inclusive classrooms. The platform supports:

  • Strong, consistent student engagement
  • Reduced teacher workload
  • More creative and interactive lessons
  • Improved access for language and learning support students
  • Shared formative practices across departments

From one teacher’s experiment to widespread adoption across an IB continuum, Wayground has become a core part of how EIS turns passive screen time into active learning for every student.
