Free Printable Greater Than Less Than Symbols Worksheets for Class 5

Focus first on the numbers being compared, not on memorizing which way the symbol points. Have students align decimal points, use equivalent fractions when needed, decide which value is larger, and only then insert >, <, or =.

Effective practice includes ordering sets of decimals, comparing fractions with unlike denominators, and completing word problems that require a comparison statement. Add an occasional equality case so students do not assume every problem must use < or >.

Watch for students comparing decimal digits without considering place value, treating the fraction with the larger denominator as greater, or reversing the inequality symbol after finding the correct larger value. Have students estimate first; for example, 0.8 must be greater than 0.37 because eight tenths exceeds three tenths.

The worksheets can be hosted as digital quizzes on Wayground or printed from PDF for classwork, homework, or assessment preparation. Each one has a complete answer key; for paper assignments, teachers can capture student work and grade it with the Wayground for Teachers app.

Common Core extends place-value comparison to decimals through thousandths while continuing fraction work based on equivalent values and common denominators. These skills build from Grade 4 comparisons and lead toward ordering rational numbers and interpreting inequalities in later grades.

Use larger type or a dyslexia-friendly font for students who need a more accessible page. During digital practice, Read Aloud can support students who understand the mathematics but struggle with word problems, while extended time helps students complete fraction conversions carefully.

The symbols are introduced before Grade 5, but fifth graders use them with more complex decimals and fractions. Grade 5 practice should therefore emphasize place-value precision, equivalent fractions, and explaining how students know one quantity is greater than another.
