Fitness testing
This is done to assess how good an athletes level of fitness is, across the different components.
Some people may find they are better in some areas compared to others.
There is what's known as 'normative data' which offers performers a chance to compare themselves to other people of a similar age, so they can see what their strength and weakness are in terms of fitness.
6
Harvard step test
CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE
The athlete steps up and down onto a standard gym bench once every two seconds for five minutes (150 steps)
7
Harvard Step Test
The assistant measures the athlete's heart rate (bpm) one min after finishing the test - Pulse1
Assistant measures the athlete's heart rate (bpm) two mins after finishing the test - Pulse2
Assistant measures the athlete's heart rate (bpm) three mins after finishing the test - Pulse3
Result = 30000 ÷ (pulse1 + pulse2 + pulse3)
8
Harvard step test
Normative data
This table is then used to give performers an idea of where their cardiovascular fitness is in comparison to others.
9
