Labelling
The pH scale stands for the "power of Hydrogen." Correctly label the parts of the pH scale
Acids
Bases
Neutral
5
Multiple Choice
Which statement about acids is FALSE?
Acids have a pH less than 7
Acids donate H+ ions in water
acids can be corrosive
Acids taste bitter and feel slippery
6
Multiple Choice
Which statement about bases is FALSE?
Bases have a pH less than 7
Bases form OH- ions in water
Soap, bleach, and detergent are some examples
Bases can be corrosive
7
Categorize
pH of 3
tastes sour taste
donates H+ ions in water to make H3O+
tastes bitter
feels slippery
forms OH- ions in water
can be strong
can be corrosive
has a pH less than 7
has a pH greater than 7
neutralizes acids
can cause burns
Sort the following properties into acids, bases, or both
8
Both acids and bases can be strong
A "strong" acid or base means that the 100% of the ions have dissociated (or separated) in the solution. The more ions there are the better a solution can conduct electricity.
A "weak" acid or base means that less than 100% of the ions have dissociated and some have stayed together. These are poor conductors of electricity.
9
Labelling
Label the columns as either strong or weak
weak
strong
10
11
Multiple Choice
Which solution will conduct electricity better?
A strong acid or base because there are more ions available to conduct the electricity
A weak acid or base because there are fewer ions available to conduct electricity

Naming Binary Acids
Acids have a specific system for the way that they are named.
Binary acids which contain Hydrogen and one other element (ex: HCl, HBr, HF) are named using the prefix of "hydro-" and the suffix of "-ic"
making HCl hydrochloric acid.
22
Multiple Choice
What is the name for HBr?
Hydrobromous acid
23
Multiple Choice
What is the name for HF?
Fluoric acid
Fluorousacid
Hydrofluorous acid
24
Naming Ternary Acids
Ternary acids contain Hydrogen and a polyatomic ion (ex: H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4). The ending of the polyatomic ion determines the suffix for the acid name. An ending of "-ate" like in the poly atomic ion nitrate (NO3) becomes "-ic" as in nitric acid but an ending of "-ite" like in the polyatomic ion nitrite (NO2) becomes "-ous" as in nitrous acid
25
Multiple Choice
What is the name for this acid?
Sulfuric acid
Sulfurous acid
Hydrosulfuric acid
Hydrosulfurous acid
26
