Sort the following properties into acids, bases, or both

Acids
Bases
Both

8

Both acids and bases can be strong

A "strong" acid or base means that the 100% of the ions have dissociated (or separated) in the solution. The more ions there are the better a solution can conduct electricity.

A "weak" acid or base means that less than 100% of the ions have dissociated and some have stayed together. These are poor conductors of electricity.

Naming Binary Acids

Acids have a specific system for the way that they are named.
Binary acids which contain Hydrogen and one other element (ex: HCl, HBr, HF) are named using the prefix of "hydro-" and the suffix of "-ic"
making HCl hydrochloric acid.

22

Multiple Choice

What is the name for HBr?

1

Hydrobromous acid

2
Bromic acid
3
Hydrobromic acid
4
Hydrobromine

23

Multiple Choice

What is the name for HF?

1
Hydrofluoric acid
2

Fluoric acid

3

Fluorousacid

4

Hydrofluorous acid

24

Naming Ternary Acids

Ternary acids contain Hydrogen and a polyatomic ion (ex: H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4). The ending of the polyatomic ion determines the suffix for the acid name. An ending of "-ate" like in the poly atomic ion nitrate (NO3) becomes "-ic" as in nitric acid but an ending of "-ite" like in the polyatomic ion nitrite (NO2) becomes "-ous" as in nitrous acid
